Problem
K2 needed colorways, material blocking, trim, and logo treatments locked for its 2012–2013 snowboarding boot lineup, designed nearly two years ahead of the season it would actually ship in. In late 2010 I spent three weeks on-site in Seattle working with Joel Brinson of Noct Bureau, taking that color and branding system from trend research through a full set of finished treatments ready to hand into production.
The work had to survive more than a screen. Every color call was constrained by physical manufacturing: dye-lot tolerances, factory lead times, and a supply chain running through a country neither of us was in. There’s no user testing a boot colorway. A Pantone match either survives a production run three seasons later or it doesn’t, and by the time anyone finds out, the factory has already committed the run.
Two years is also long enough that the season being designed didn’t exist yet in any meaningful sense: no confirmed retail conditions, no guarantee the trend research from late 2010 would still read correctly by the time boots hit a shop floor in 2012. The brief wasn’t just “design a colorway,” it was “design a colorway that will still look intentional after two years of lead time have passed between the decision and the shelf.”
Outcome
Two full seasons of colorways and branding treatments, delivered and shipped into production.

Each responsibility covered a different layer of the same system: color blocking set the palette and where it landed on the boot, logo and type treatments carried brand identity across the line, and trend forecasting and material research supplied the evidence behind both.
Approach
Reading the artifacts
The work moved through three layers, each visible in the material below. A technical blueprint broke a boot down panel by panel, specifying exactly where a color, material, or logo treatment applied and to what tolerance: the level “material blocking” actually operates at, not a moodboard abstraction of it. Material and color-intent boards translated trend research into physical swatches a factory could source and match. Trend research itself, gathered from where the wider outdoor and snow industry was heading for a season still two years out, set the direction before any panel-level decision got made.
The Ryker colorway and the Darko material-intent work below are two different points on that same process: one a finished colorway carried through to product, the other the intent board that argued for a direction before it was locked. Seeing both side by side is closer to how the work actually happened than either alone: research and resolution, not one clean line from idea to shipped boot.
Digital tools carried the file, not the decision
Illustrator and Photoshop built the lockups, spec sheets, and panel-by-panel breakdowns, but the actual color and material decisions ran through physical swatches held next to reference fabric under real light, not a monitor calibrated to a different standard than a factory’s dye house. Color blocking and trend forecasting sat behind everything: reading where the season’s palette was heading before locking a single boot’s spec.
Connected work
This line shipped through Subfolio, the filesystem-based CMS I later revisited in a 2026 modernization case study elsewhere on this site. K2’s 2012–13 boot line is one of the projects listed in that piece’s own production history. Noct Bureau, and Joel Brinson specifically, is the same studio and collaborator credited with the production work behind Red Bull’s Where the Trail Ends, also documented there. Small studios running unrelated-looking briefs, a snow-industry boot line and a record label among them, through the same production tooling and the same handful of collaborators, is a fair snapshot of what commercial design work actually looked like at that scale: fewer specialized silos than case-study framing usually suggests, more of the same few tools and people reused across very different briefs.

Learnings
Designing for physical manufacturing resets what “done” means. Color-matching tolerances and production lead times are constraints no screen-only tool can simulate: a swatch that looks right in Photoshop still has to survive a dye lot, a factory, and a shipping route before it’s actually finished. And working in a completely different creative discipline, even briefly, is one of the sharpest resets available to a digital designer: three weeks spent inside someone else’s constraints is enough to find out which of your working assumptions were about design, and which were only ever about screens.
