These are the pivotal moments that shaped my thinking, and the skills I've developed along the way. I've always felt free to take on projects regardless of the industry. Working in print, digital, advertising, and printing has kept me engaged in creative growth and experimentation. it's a reflection of challenging myself creatively and solving problems as an engineer, immersing myself in advertising, or working on complex design systems.

Accessibility Achievement: Worldwide WCAG 2.1 AA Compliance
In December of 2024 we achieved Deque Monitor scores of 95% and above across 120 sites spanning Hearst Magazines International in the United States, Europe, and Asia — growing from 0% to 95%+ WCAG 2.1 AA in under 2.5 years. This achievement represents a significant milestone in our commitment to accessibility and inclusive design, ensuring that our digital products are usable by people of all abilities.
After successfully launching Custom Feeds I was promoted from Senior Product Designer to Staff Product Designer / Independent contributor. In this role I took on more technical leadership responsibilities, including architectural decisions, code reviews, and design system processes. I also became a vocal advocate for accessibility and inclusive design across the organization.

Senior Designer: Hearst Digital Magazines
I joined Hearst Magazines in October 2013 as a Senior Product Designer. The plan was to unify a dozen separate codebases into a single platform in order to scale the benefits of new features. I worked closely with engineering and product teams to create a design system from scratch, which eventually evolved into a single platform, CMS, and codebase that scaled from 15 U.S. titles to ~120 global properties and helped grow the monthly audience from 15M to 512M unique visitors. Before the CMS work began I was embedded with the Esquire editorial team in order to get a feel for the needs of our editorial users and the unique challenges of magazine content.

What I Learned
Editorial teams are a unique breed of users. They need powerful tools that can handle complex content, but they also need those tools to be intuitive and easy to use. If you don’t build the right tools, they’ll hack together their own solutions using whats available. This can lead to a lot of technical debt and security issues. I learned that building a CMS is not just about building a tool for editors, it’s about building a tool that can scale and evolve with the needs of the business.

What I Learned
Wearing both the product and design hat in a small team forced me to think holistically about every decision. Design choices had to be justified with data, and product decisions had to be grounded in user experience. A/B testing became my tool for resolving subjective debates with objective evidence—a habit I’ve carried forward ever since.

Associate Designer: AOL
Joined AOL as an Associate Designer, working on one of the web's largest platforms at a pivotal moment in internet history. Designing at AOL's scale sharpened my understanding of how design decisions ripple across massive user bases and the discipline required to maintain consistency across a sprawling product ecosystem. At this point in time the AOL homepage was a major traffic driver and a key entry point for millions of users, so the design work had a significant impact on user experience and engagement. I contributed to the design of the AOL homepage, landing pages, and various promotional materials, learning how to balance creativity with the constraints of a large-scale platform.
